The internet has revolutionised our lives.  It has brought the sum of human knowledge to our fingertips, has widened our horizons and opened up avenues of exploration that were hitherto closed off.  It has changed forever the way we communicate with others.

But there's a downside.  It has also brought pornography into our living rooms (or worse, our children's bedrooms) and given sexual predators and cyber bullies easy and anonymous access to the most vulnerable members of our society.

Just as you would protect your child from physical harm, so too should protect their innocence and emotional wellbeing.

What are the dangers?

Inappropriate material:  This can include pornography, incitements to hated or violence, violent images, inappropriate religious or quasi religious material, materials that induce feelings of extreme fear or despair, etc.

Sexual Predators: The internet, more than any other medium, allows the unscrupulous to hide behind a veil of anonymity and sexual predators have been quick to take advantage of this fact.  At any given time, there are literally thousands of people out there, searching the internet for vulnerable children that they can exploit.  Some are seeking only to engage in sexually explicit conversation.  Some are after explicit images; and others are seeking to ‘groom' a child for a face to face meeting at a later date.  These people are clever, determined and ruthless and know very well how to worm their way into an unsuspecting child's confidence.

Cyber bulling: When you and I were at school, we could at least leave the bullies behind us when we went home.  These days, the bullies follow our kids wherever they are through txt messages, emails and social networking sites.  Kids are often afraid to admit that they are being cyber bullied in case their parents remove their access to technology as a result, or in case a parent's investigation reveals something that the child wants kept secret.  Cyber bullying can be particularly cruel though, and if your child is being bullied in this way, you need to know about it.  There have been a number of cases in recent years where cyber bulling played a significant role in the suicide or attempted suicide of a child or young person.
